Conrail was the only railroad to receive an order for the SD80MAC locomotive, making many of its features Conrail specific, such as recessed red nose marker lights. The SD80MAC itself is a 5000hp road diesel, and was the first EMD locomotive to use a 20 cylinder engine (vs. the normal 16) since the SD45-2. These locomotives were also notable as being Conrail’s first AC traction unit, which when coupled with their self steering HTCR-II trucks gave them a much higher tractive effort than any other Conrail locomotives. |
