The EF200 is a new-generation locomotive that is the successor to the EF66. It is the first Japanese electric locomotive to adopt a method of driving a three-phase AC induction motor by VVVF inverter control. In addition, innovations such as bolsterless carts, single-arm pantographs, and electric-command automatic air brakes have also been adopted.
Since 1992, a mass-production model has appeared, and a total of 21 units of 1 prototype vehicle and 20 mass-production models have been manufactured. Since 2005, the body color has been changed to a new paint color based on more vivid blue and gray, and is currently active on the Tokaido Sanyo Main Line.
